Arbor Magazine
Editorial Design, Typography, Illustration
Timeline: 10 weeks
Overview: A new look at a gardening magazine that focuses on the benefits of gardening for a diverse range of plant enthusiasts.
Problem: Many gardening magazines focus exclusively on gardening methods without exploring the cultural and environmental benefits of gardening.
Solution: Arbor Magazine explores the benefits of gardening for both personal and environmental wellbeing through practical gardening tips, science articles and essays.
Process
I created a moodboard that considers the variety of content that the magazine features, as well as the interests of the diverse audience. This is the visual concept that the art direction and brand of the magazine were based on.
Moodboard
The layouts were designed to incorporate heavy text, procedural information and photography, while relating conceptually to the content of the articles.
Layout
For the magazine masthead, I explored creating custom ligatures and glyphs. The final masthead honors the alternate glyphs in the typeface, while expanding on them to explore the branching, connective meaning behind the magazine’s name.
